A Swedish self-storage company has launched the Cat Flat, a cat house with space for felines to play, sleep and feel at home, hidden within an elegant handcrafted cabinet.
Described as ‘the world’s first non-ugly cat furniture’, the Cat Flat has been designed with a cat’s necessities in mind, without compromising on the human need of surrounding oneself with beautiful things in the home.
The Cat Flat has been designed in response to the rise of small space living in Sweden. With urbanisation and rising house prices, living spaces are getting smaller and smaller, especially in big cities, according to the Swedish housing authority Boverket. But as a result of these compact spaces, indoor cats may no longer be able to get their natural needs fulfilled.
According to cat psychologist Susanne Hellman Holmström, author of the book If The Cat Could Decide, this is one of the main reasons why cat owners may see a change in their cat’s behaviour.
‘Cats are very popular pets and people tend to forget that they have a lot of instincts left from the wild. Something that every cat owner should take into consideration is to offer the cat possibilities to spy, hunt and give them a place where they can hide,’ Susanne explains.
Designed by Eleonor Moschevitz and composed by Stockholms Möbelverkstad, the Cat Flat is like a cat den but much bigger, more accommodating and without compromising on aesthetic. It enables kitties to feel safe and secure inside their own enclosed environment and come and go as they please.
Cats can move freely throughout the three-level cabinet, which is made out of walnut veneer. The slats covering the doors of the cabinet function as an abstract interpretation of nature, while inside the cabinet is decorated with sisal mats and leather. The brushes are made of FSC-certified beech wood with boar bristles and the scrubs consist of ecological coconut.
By making the Cat Flat, , the company behind the product which is launching during Stockholm Design Week 2020, hopes to encourage more people to make room at home for the things that matter the most.
Gabriel Bergqvist, Head of Brand & Business Development at 24Storage, explains: ‘Many of us lack good storage opportunities at home or use parts of the home as storage space, rather than to enhance the things that we love the most. By making some changes at home and getting an external storage, you could create a larger life for yourself, or why not even for your cat?’
With 141k Instagram followers, Sweden’s most popular catfluencers, , were the first cats to try out the Cat Flat.
‘To create a design piece for a cat has been a challenging task, due to the fact that an ordinary piece of cat furniture usually is quite tasteless,’ says interior architect Eleonor Moschevitz. ‘But to open the doors of the cabinet and watch the cats explore every corner and every passageway of it, really makes worth it.’
